Nationwide attention, thanks to research and an event.
In 2019, the first ‘girlfriend speed date’ in the Netherlands took place in Utrecht, an initiative of women's weekly Vriendin and platform VriendinnenOnline.nl. The two editors-in-chief shared an interest in the theme of 'loneliness through a lack of friendship'; a much bigger (social) problem one might think. In order to get clear and useful insights on this theme, research was conducted. One of the conclusions was that half of the women feel lonely, and that over 30% are not satisfied with their current friendships. The parties involved decided to join forces, resulting in very successful ‘speed dates’. The first ‘girlfriend speed date’ was widely discussed in, for example, Algemeen Dagblad, RTL 4 Editie NL, RTL Nieuws, Franska en bij NOS Radio 1 Journaal and the 3FM Vriendenteam.
